As a first-generation American, my journey through life has been shaped by the tenacious determination of my parents to secure a better future for their children. Their sacrifices, coupled with my own struggles and triumphs in the realm of education, have led me to a profound appreciation for arts education in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and its transformative power. I invite you to join me on a journey in education that explores the intersection of family, education, and the pursuit of knowledge.
Where My Story Begins
My story begins with my grandparents, who immigrated to the United States in search of opportunities that were scarce in their homeland. Driven by the promise of a brighter future, both sets of my Italian grandparents and my father embarked on a journey to Argentina after World War II. However, tragedy struck early in my father’s life when he lost his father at the age of 12. Despite this hardship, he persevered, shouldering the responsibility of supporting his family alongside his older brother. It wasn’t until his fifties that he finally achieved the milestone of graduating from high school.
My mother, born and raised in Argentina, faced limited options for education. In Argentina, secondary education gears towards specific career paths, similar to magnet schools in the United States. Despite financial constraints hindering her pursuit of formal education, my mother’s passion for the arts never waned. A creative spirit, she grappled with dyslexia but found solace in her love for fashion and clothing, a skill passed down from my grandmother, who taught her how to sew. Designing and crafting her own clothes became a cherished outlet for her creativity.
Feeling constrained by the limited opportunities in Argentina, she eventually married my father, and they embarked on a journey that led them to Queens, New York, where they planted roots and forged a new life together.
An Educational Pursuit
As a child, I vividly recall my mother’s relentless pursuit of education. Despite the demands of motherhood, she remained determined to create a brighter future for herself and her children. Balancing childcare during the day with night and weekend classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology, she exemplified unwavering dedication. She dreamed of becoming a fashion designer, and she poured her heart and soul into her studies. Although she never completed her college education, her resilience and tenacity were evident in her career as a pattern maker in the fashion industry of New York City, where she collaborated with numerous renowned companies.
My mother’s journey serves as a testament to her strength and determination. She inspired me with her unwavering pursuit of her dreams despite the obstacles she faced. Her legacy continues to shape my values and aspirations, reminding me of the importance of perseverance and passion in the face of adversity.
Language Barriers
Growing up in a household where Spanish was the primary language, I faced the challenge of adapting to an English-speaking educational environment. Despite my parents’ unwavering support, navigating the intricacies of school was daunting. Yet, their relentless encouragement fueled my courage and desire to succeed. From the freezing confines of the Planetarium bubble to exhilarating field trips to the natural museum, I found solace in hands-on learning experiences that ignited my curiosity and stoked my passion for knowledge. However, it wasn’t until we relocated to Long Island that I truly found my academic stride.
Middle school became a turning point as I discovered my love for technology, art, music, and other hands-on courses that catered to my learning style. The allure of the technology room and the excitement of engaging projects provided me with an avenue to thrive academically. By the time I entered high school, I had honed my keyboard skills, a valuable asset that would serve me well in the years to come. While traditional learning methods such as memorization and exams presented challenges, I found solace in project-based classes where creativity and innovation took center stage.
Working as an Educator
Fast forward to the present, and I find myself immersed in the field of education for nearly two decades. From my experiences as a student to my role as an educator and currently, as a leader, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of how Arts education is so involved in the world around us. It’s in everything we see, use, play, and interact with in our daily lives. It is my firm belief that the future of education lies in embracing technology, and the arts, STEM as an integral part of the curriculum. Gone are the days of memorization and standardized testing. Instead, we must empower our children to become problem solvers and critical thinkers who draw upon past experiences to shape the future.
Through my journey, I have come to understand that education is not confined to the four walls of a classroom. Rather, it is a lifelong pursuit fueled by curiosity and a thirst for knowledge. As I continue to advocate for arts education, I am reminded of the importance of nurturing each child’s unique talents and interests. Whether it’s through reading, hands-on activities, or harnessing their boundless energy, every child deserves the opportunity to flourish and succeed.
My Journey Through STEM
My journey through STEM and education has been one of resilience, growth, and determination. From humble beginnings to advocating for change on a broader scale, I remain committed to empowering the next generation of innovators and problem solvers. For me, the path forward is clear: embrace technology, foster creativity, and instill a lifelong love of learning in every child. Together, we can pave the way for a brighter, more inclusive future where STEM serves as a catalyst for positive change.
